These top 5 picks are based on the basis of: affordability, design, how well they hold up and how accessible are they to get (i.e. Can you get them on amazon vs. having to go through a subscription).

Let’s dive in a little bit into the world of disposable diapers and I will share my recommendations!
Table of Contents
ToggleIf you are a brand new mom, or even a mom to be of almost 4 (as I am) you may be completely new to this whole idea that most conventional diaper options out there may not be the best for our tiniest of humans to be living in 24/7 for most of their year and up in life.
I have also been there, and still in times in a pinch I will just grab my box from Costco and move on in life, because let’s be honest, fear is more toxic than anything!
If you are prepared though, and can plan ahead, I might suggest looking into some better options. According to the EWG, most conventional diapers contain hazardous chemicals such a VOCs (volatile organic compounds) pesticides, phthalates (plastics) parabens, and BPA. All in which can cause many issues such as endocrine disorders, cancer, and allergic reactions. If we think about it, our babies spend most of their 1st year of life and beyond in these!
Another big offender of a lot of conventional diapers is the fragrance. Ever notice some diapers have a “scent”? Synthetic fragrance can be one of the worst things for our health since the fragrance can be composed of over 3,000 chemicals that the manufacturer does not have to disclose. Synthetic fragrances can also be endocrine disruptors and cause allergic reactions. Check out my blog post on 5 Easy Budget Friendly Steps to get started with Non toxic living here and learn more about the dangers of synthetic fragrance.
Choosing a less toxic diaper can include looking for diapers made of bamboo instead of plastic or latex, free of fragrance, and free of phthalates or chlorine. A lot of conventional diapers use chlorine in their wetness indicator and the pulp that is used to absorb the moisture in the diaper.
Let’s Answer some common questions before digging into my 5 Best Non-toxic Disposable diapers:
Do Huggies diapers have chemicals?
Huggies are a huge brand that most hospitals carry and are usually one of the main brands parents first hear about when they have a baby. Huggies do a great job with the diaper doing its job (keeping wetness at bay) but unfortunately, they have not made any changes in becoming a less toxic of a diaper. Their website states that they still use conventional ingredients such as polypropylene, polyester, and polyethylene which are all synthetic materials designed to enhance the fit of the diaper and help stop leaks. So yes, Huggies diapers do have chemicals in them.
Are Pampers toxic free?
Pampers are another very popular mainstream brand that a lot of hospitals carry as well when you have a baby. The brand Pampers unfortunately are not 100 percent toxic free as most diapers are not. They still use mostly plastic linings in their diapers which can be a form of a toxin. The good news about Pampers is that all of their diapers are free of parabens and latex. That is a big step! Their website also states that all of their diapers are free of BPA, dioxins, disperse dyes, elemental chlorine, lead and mercury, pesticide residue, phenol and pvc. The only downfall is that they contain “light fragrance” and their skin protecting lotion is made with petrolatum(petroleum)
More good news? They have a “pure” line that goes further with excluding fragrance, using some cotton in their diapers instead of all plastic, and using shea butter instead of petrolatum in their skin protecting lotion. Check them out here!
Are Pampers Pure non-toxic?
In reference from above, while Pampers Pure are not 100% “non-toxic” I believe that Pampers Pure is a great option for a greener diaper for your baby and the environment. The Pampers Pure line is an absolutely great option if you are looking to stick to a budget-friendly diaper or are just getting your feet wet into this whole “living less toxic life” starting with diapers for little ones. Grab them here
All of these diapers rate high due to being budget-friendly, less toxic, accessible(can buy on amazon) and durability.
Dyper- this brand hits all the marks for me and my toddler(2 years old.) It is the best performing and has the cleanest ingredients out of all the diapers I have tried. It is a plant based disposable made out of 100 percent viscose from bamboo which is much safer than the plastic shells made on most diapers. What I was ultimately impressed with was how well these diapers held up! My toddler was able to sleep in them overnight with no issues of leaking. I was also impressed with how soft these diapers were; I believe they have to be so comfortable on a babies skin! These diapers use the cleanest ingredients using OEKO-TEX certified ingredients which is a big deal! According to the OEKO-TEX website this means that the label certifies every component of the product, from the fabric to the thread and accessories, has been rigorously tested against a list of up to 350 toxic chemicals. In my opinion, OEKO-TEX certification is taking over the world of organic, and I am so happy because a lot of common name brands are now taking on the certification. Dyper brand is different also because it is unprinted so it does not use any dyes, fragrances, lotions, latex, chlorine, parabens, sulphates, & phthalates. I have tried many bamboo diapers and none have lived up to the quality of this brand. Highly recommend! While these diapers are the highest price point of all my picks, I think they are definitely worth it. On amazon they break down to be about 0.44 per diaper plus you get free wipes! Check them out here!
Con-The only con that comes with this diaper is that if you are looking for cute patterns you will not find them with this brand as they are unprinted.
Hello Bello- these diapers came in second favorite to me. These diapers were sturdy but not as sturdy as the Dyper brand. This brand offers subscriptions and offers a ton of other non-toxic baby products as well. They are made without chlorine processing, artificial fragrance, phthalates, parabens, lotions, or latex. They are made with ECF(elemental chlorine free pulp) diaper core. The diaper bundles come in bundles of 7 packs containing 32 diapers each for $69.99 coming out to roughly 0.31 per diaper. You also get to choose the patterns which are all super cute! You can use this link to get 20% off your first bundle! I also love that they have a wetness indicator for sizes newborn through size 3. The wetness indicator only goes through size 3 due to the fact that as children grow they start to pee a lot more and don’t need the wetness indicator. It is so comforting as a new parent to see that wetness indicator turn so you know your child is urinating enough. A lot of people don’t love wetness indicators because they are typically made with chlorine, but Hello Bello uses chlorine free! You can also get them at Wal-Mart(if they have them) or on Amazon here. The starter bundle though is the best option for 20% off.
Con-the only con with this brand is they are sometimes hard to find unless you go through the subscription option.
Honest Brand– I am sure a lot of people are aware of this brand out there as they are pretty widely available. The Honest diapers resemble the Hello Bello diapers in that they have cute prints available and have the same type of structure. They do hold up well. They do not have the wetness indicator which some people might want. What I like about the Honest diaper brand is that they go off of a “NO list” which is a list of over 3500 chemicals they will not use in their brand. They also go through rigorous testing of their products to test each product for safety, efficacy and integrity. They use a chlorine-free absorbent core and sustainably managed wood pulp in their diapers. The cost runs about 0.37 per diaper. Check them out here
Con– the only con is that they do not use a wetness indicator
Thrive Market brand- I love using the Thrive market brand because they are such a good product and they can be added to one of my many orders I place(usually monthly or sometimes more!) if you haven’t heard of Thrive Market you are missing out! They are basically a Costco that delivers non-gmo, organic, non-toxic items to your door at Costco prices! You can get 30% off your first order and free gift when you sign up for a membership here. They use Totally chlorine free wood pulp, no fragrances and they hold up very well. They also do not use a wetness indicator. They price out to be about 0.37 per diaper so similar cost with Honest Brand. The best thing about these diapers is that I can grab them with all my other non-toxic baby essentials like lotions and wipes and pantry staples too! You can check out their membership options here!
Con-the only con would be the no wetness indicator for me and they are only available via Thrive Market subscription.
Millie Moon– this is also a great brand you can get exclusively from Target. These diapers hold up great. These are also OEKO-TEK certified which is awesome and free from lotions, latex, fragrance and elemental chlorine. These seem to be the most budget-friendly of the group coming in at about 0.23 per diaper. The only downfall is that you cannot get these through a subscription or Amazon, and sometimes Target does not have them in stock.
Con- Sometimes hard to find, no subscription or Amazon
