Sharing is caring!
So many brands claim their dish soap is clean and non-toxic, but what brands are truly clean and perform well? What is the best non-toxic dish soap? I’m excited to do a roundup of the best natural dish soaps out there.
Admittedly, liquid dish soap was one of the last items on my non-toxic list of things that had to go. For whatever reason, I just didn’t really think of the need for dish soap to be non-toxic. Even though it absolutely should! It touches everything from our hands that wash the dishes, to our mouths that eat off of our plates!
I don’t want to be eating off of plates that are washed in synthetic blue liquids with fragrance and a slew of other endocrine disruptors. Thankfully, today there are a good number of non-toxic dish soaps out there that work well as performance is also a big key! Nobody wants a non-toxic dish soap that doesn’t clean the dishes well. I will be sharing the best non-toxic dish soap brands for 2024.

Truly Free
This brand has become increasingly popular over the past year and for a good reason! They offer a whole line of everyday household items and are very budget-friendly. I first tried out their laundry detergent and was very impressed.
Truly Free is a brand that was started by a family who made the company after having their first baby who suffered from severe eczema and the doctors just wanted to put the baby on steroids. The family wanted some real answers and after asking a family friend for advice, they found out their toxic laundry detergent could be causing their baby’s skin issues.
According to their website,
“We’ve saved an estimated 13 and a half million toxic laundry loads from seeping into the environment this year alone. Over 3 million pieces of plastic from being dumped into our oceans, and we’ve freed over 300,000 homes from toxic chemicals.”
Pretty cool!
Pros: When they say their ingredients are “truly free” they really are! They don’t use any harmful ingredients such as dyes or synthetic fragrances. Organic sweet basil essential oil is used for the scent, which is very refreshing! They use ingredients from coconuts and citrus to break down food particles. It is also very concentrated, so you only need a couple of drops to get the cleanest dishes yet! It suds up very well too, which can be hard for a non-toxic dish soap.
I also like that it gets sent to you in refill pouches. When you first order, you get sent a plastic dish soap bottle and refill packets. You simply fill the bottle with warm water up to the fill line and then simply add the packet of concentrate in, shake and it is ready to go!
Cons: The dish soap is not sold on Amazon, but only through their website. You can buy the dish soap singlehandedly or they offer subscription services at a discounted rate which I know some people love! I am just not a person who loves having stuff on subscription as sometimes I don’t feel I use them quickly enough. You can change how often you want them sent or pause the subscription though so that is what I did, I just delayed my subscription for a couple of months! You can also add their other products to your subscription and they have a lot of great non-toxic products.
Cost: $16.95 for buy once for 2 refill packets that will last a good while
$15.26 if you get on subscription service. It gets cheaper with more items you add to your box.
If you add 5 or more products you can get the dish soap as low as $10.17
Molly’s Suds is one of my very favorite non-toxic brands. I have been using their laundry soap for years now and I think their ingredients are top-notch. The story of why the founder started Molly’s Suds is very powerful. She unfortunately lost her daughter, Molly as a stillborn baby. They began to ask questions and research the products that they use most; one was of course laundry detergent. She was horrified at the amount of unregulated ingredients in chemicals that are allowed into conventional laundry detergents.
She realized that most people care what they eat and put into their bodies in that way, but most people are oblivious to the fact that what we put on to our skin leaches into our bloodstream and thus gets passed to babies in utero as well. Thus, Molly’s Suds was founded. They pride themselves in using the safest ingredients available with products that actually work.
Pros: as stated before, I love this brand and it’s mission. I also love the simple, clean effective ingredients they use. They use naturally essenced ingredients mad from natural plant essences and oils for their items that use fragrance. It easily cuts through grease and hard water to leave your dishes sparkling.
Cons: A two-pack of dish soap is $18 coming out to $9 a bottle for 16oz so the price is the only con for me.
Price: $18 for a pack of 2 on Amazon
This brand I have used for over 5 years now as my source for all things “all Purpose” There truly isn’t anything the Branch Basics Concentrate cannot be used for to clean! Their story is super empowering as well. Two friends who grew up together became sick in their college years and really couldn’t figure out why. They were invited to come spend a summer with their Aunt Marilee who is the queen of living a non-toxic life.
Their summer was spent completely healing their bodies in an environment without fragrances, eating real, from the earth foods and they completely transformed their health. They decided to form a cleaning company as they knew of the toxic chemicals and how they impacted their health. Thus, Branch Basics was made.
These are the only ingredients in their concentrate: Purified Water, Decyl Glucoside, Organic Chamomile Flower Extract, Coco-Glucoside, Sodium Citrate, Sodium Bicarbonate, Sodium Phytate
The amazing thing is, this concentrate WORKS! I use it in everything from laundry to cleaning to produce wash, to dish soap. It is so safe, you can even use it on your skin. That is pretty amazing!
Pros: The bottle concentrate is literally used for everything and works great as a dish soap-just follow the instructions on dilution
Cons: Not found on Amazon and there are no surfactants used, so no “suds” This might be tricky if first switching over to non-toxic products as you are used to that sudsy, soapy feeling to feel as you are cleaning. I promise you, this will pass!
Cost– $55 for 32 oz concentrate(hint you do not use much of the concentrate at all and the bottle of concentrate lasts me months)
This dish soap is EWG certified which if you aren’t aware is the environmental working group. The EWG is a non-profit, non-partisan organization whose whole mission is to help people find products and ingredients that live up to a non-toxic standard of living. They rate products and ingredients and give them certain grades and scores based on their clean ingredients or not-so-clean ingredients in a lot of cases. If a product is “EWG Certified” it means that it has “met the highest standards created in the interest of public health.”
Pros: I love that this dish soap is completely non-toxic and performs well. Unfortunately, a lot of non-toxic dish soaps just don’t perform well with getting dishes clean. Attitude does; it soaps up well and cleans excellently. They have unscented soap which I prefer.
Cons: Unfortunately, most of their scented dish soaps contain fragrance of synthetic forms which I am not a fan of. They use parfum and Tetrahydrolinalool which are synthetic fragrance agent make sure that they are only infused with natural essences from essential oils or nature.
They also make baby dish soap to wash baby bottles and baby items! Formulated with 97% naturally derived ingredients and contains no added dyes. Again, I would just go with the unscented version as the scented soaps have synthetic fragrances.
Cost– $5.10 for 23.7 oz
Another really great non-toxic brand that carries a lot of other non-toxic household supplies! This brand is great because like Molly’s Suds and Truly Free, it was started by a person who had family. His goal was to make effective plant-based ingredients items for personal care and household products after he noticed that his dog kept repeatedly getting sick after using a common toxic floor product used with mopping. I have used their laundry detergent as well and also really like it.
Pros: All of their formulas are at least 98.5% natural ingredients meaning they source ingredients from items such as coconut, lime, salt, olive oil, sunflower seed, green tea, geranium, and other natural items.
Cons: they also do source from corn which can be contaminated with glyphosate a toxic ingredient used as an herbicide found in the majority of our foods.
Their website does state this: “Corn and Corn Sugars have been confirmed as Non-GMO by our suppliers but are not formally “Non-GMO Project Verified” at this time”
While I think it’s great they are confirmed to be non-GMO, non-GMO does not mean organic and means the corn is most like sprayed with glyphosate.
Cost-$21.84 for a pack of 3 16 oz bottles coming out to roughly $7.66 per bottle
I like this dish soap as it can be found at some grocery stores like my Kroger brand grocery store. This brand has been around for a long time starting back to 1977! Their mission is to create safer cleaning products for the environment and the health of the people. Their “foundational ingredients” include coconut oil, beets(I know sounds strange but they make a great cleaning powder!) vinegar, minerals, and vitamin E. They also use natural essential oils for any product with scent.
Their Unscented Dish Soap Rates an “A” on EWG!
Pros: They make a lot of non-toxic cleaning products, and the products work well. Very budget friendly
Cons: The fragranced dish soaps are significantly more than the unscented versions.
Cost $7.65 for 25oz pack of 2 (unscented)
This is a good clean brand for dish soap, in my opinion, I like the ingredients. There is a community of people who don’t trust brands when they get bought by bigger corporations because they believe they will change their ingredients, but I think most of the time this doesn’t happen and I have not seen it happen with the ingredients in their dish soap.
A back story is this brand appeared on Shark Tank and then after becoming even more successful, got acquired by Bissell.
This dish soap performs well, and I like the ingredients in the unscented version that I tested.
Pros: Ingredients are good, performs well and they do not use synthetic fragrance for their fragranced products.
Cons: Got bought out by a large company (Bissell) so potential for ingredient changes. A bit more pricey than the rest of the options. Pricier option
Cost: $26.97 for a pack of 2- 22 oz bottles -$13.48 per bottle
This is a Thrive Maket exclusive brand. Thrive Market came out with their own brand of non-toxic household and cleaning supplies. If you are new to Thrive Market, think of it is an all-in-one shopping center delivered straight to your door. Everything from food(organic, non-GMO, all dietary needs) to household supplies! Make sure you check out my full blog post on the best Thrive Market products! This is a great brand, and probably the most cost efficient dish soap brand. They use plant powered ingredients and the dishes clean very well. They don’t use any synthetic fragrances.
Pros: Very cost effective, works well
Cons: Can only purchase on Thrive Market
Cost: $3.99 for 24 oz bottle or $7.99 for 52 oz bottle
This is a decent brand of dish soap, it performs well and has a good mission to be environmentally friendly and “cleaner” however, the only problem I have is they use sodium laureth sulfate which can unfortunately be contaminated with 1,4 dioxane a potential carcinogen that can also cause a lot of irritations.
Pros: 100% biodegradable, I think they have a good mission. Definitely a better option than conventional dish soap
Cons: Uses sodium laureth sulfate, cannot be found on Amazon, only on Thrive Market.
Cost: $4.49 on Thrive Market for 19oz bottle
This is another great option to clean dishes with as well. 10 parts warm water to one part Castille soap is all you need to clean your dishes. Castille soap is great because it is made from plant oils so it is completely non-toxic and biodegradable.
Pros– Very cost-efficient option and can use Castille soap for many other uses besides dishes
Cons: I like to be able to just use the amount I need per dish. I like the convenience of bottled dish soap.
Cost $31.94 for 2 pack 32 oz concentrate bottles
Just like other household products and personal care products, harsh chemicals in dish soaps carry the same nasty offenders we don’t want on or in our bodies. The good news is the dish soap industry has come a long way and
Fragrance: If you have been around here any amount time, you know my dislike of synthetic fragrances. Synthetic fragrance is anything that isn’t essenced with ingredients like essential oils. Fragrance or “parfum” is another term. Fragrance is an unregulated term for harmful chemicals and can contain any amount of chemicals the brand wants to add in without disclosing what they are. It should be a huge thing to avoid on the ingredient list.
Phthalates: Another big offender ingredient that is found in most everything these days (they are evening finding phthalates in food these days!) Phthalates are a group of chemicals that are used to makes plastics more durable. They are often used to help ingredients bind together and help fragrances linger longer. (Even another reason to ditch fragrance!)
Nonlyphenol Ethoxylates: also known as surfactants which help trap dirt and other substances like food and remove it from the surface of the dish. These chemicals can be highly toxic to aquatic life. They can also cause skin and respiratory irritation. (Source)
Anti-microbial ingredients: anti-microbial is supposed to be good right? Not exactly. Unfortunately, the way consumers overuse antimicrobials such as hand sanitizers, etc. actually leads our immune systems to become more vulnerable. Increased bacterial resistance can occur along with adverse effects like allergic reactions according to a study done by NCBI
PEGs/Polysorbate these can contain carcinogenic compounds such as 1,4 dioxane
Harsh Preservatives– often emit harmful compounds such as formaldehyde
Synthetic Dyes– These are often not even noted in the ingredients, however, these pose a big problem as children might see this as something to play with, increasing the toxicity risk
These unfortunately aren’t even all the chemicals found in conventional dish soaps, but this shows how toxic a seemingly harmless product like dish soap can be.
I would say Branch Basics, Castille soap, or Truly Free are the safest dish soaps to use
Same as above! Branch Basics, Castille soap or Truly Free!
I hope that this roundup post of the best non-toxic dish soap brands was helpful! Let me know if you try any and what you love as well!
