What is Red Light Therapy and How Does Red Light Therapy Work?

In simplified terms, RLT or red light therapy is a light (red) that uses wavelengths to improve the function of the mitochondria in our bodies at the cellular level. If you aren’t familiar with the roles of mitochondria, in essence, they are the powerhouse of the cell where our cell’s energy is created. Our mitochondria need energy to thrive and with our daily lives, they can get a bit worn down. Mitochondria help with anything and everything from muscle contraction to skin repair, hair growth, and tissue healing. According to everydayhealth.com, this type of therapy has been around for more than 50 years and was discovered by a Hungarian physician (Endre Mester) who was using red lasers on rats for experiments and noticed that this experiment led to hair growth and wound healing.

The sun and its light are one of the most healing tools in wellness. If you are feeling sick, I guarantee you if you head out into the sun and let it shine in your skin you will feel better than you did. The only downfall of the sun is the UV rays it puts out. Red light therapy can harness the beneficial powers of the sunlight without the harmful UV rays. Red and near-infrared light possesses the unique ability to penetrate the skin more effectively.

What is Red Light Therapy good to use for?

Really anything! From collagen stimulation to mental health to injury repair. RLT is great to use on your skin if you are working on collagen and wrinkle prevention/treatment. It’s also amazing for any injuries or inflammation in the body from headaches to sprained ankles. It aids in relaxation and recovery; to be used at bedtime to help wind down and help prepare for a restful sleep.

RLT can help support and reset circadian rhythms by blocking blue light and stimulating melatonin production. I think every person could use support like this as most people don’t wake up with the sun and go to sleep or dim lights when the sun goes down. We are tied to our cell phones and TVs all night messing up our natural circadian rhythms and ultimately destroying our sleep. Blue light is usually used specifically for acne, red light is most popularly known as the anti-ageing and wound healing hero.

A clinical trial done by NCBI that used 136 volunteers in a prospective, randomized, and controlled study to test if red light devices improved skin appearance found this:

“Results: The treated subjects experienced significantly improved skin complexion and skin feeling, profilometrically assessed skin roughness, and ultrasonographically measured collagen density. The blinded clinical evaluation of photographs confirmed significant improvement in the intervention groups compared with the control.”

To summarize:

Red light therapy treatment can help with

  • Healthier skin
  • Better mood and energy
  • Reduced joint pain and inflammation
  • Faster muscle recovery
  • Helps encourage hair growth
  • Helps to minimize fine lines
  • tissue repair
  • Increase in blood flow
  • dark spots on the skin
  • Skin conditions

Truly, any person can benefit from the benefits of RLT. Let’s dive into the Lumebox review, one of the best red light therapy devices on the market in my opinion.

What makes Lumebox so special?

You have probably noticed there are so many red light therapy devices out on the market, some that cost as much as a monthly mortgage payment, to devices you question if they would even turn on with the cheap price. To be honest, I strayed away from buying any red light therapy products for the longest time due to just these issues. I wasn’t willing to take out a second mortgage, and I didn’t have any faith in the 45-dollar Amazon model.

I was super excited when I saw that an M.D. came out with this model, the Lumebox and it was very affordable for my needs.

Lumebox is registered as a class II medical device with the FDA (Federal Drug Administration)  and should be reimbursable through an FSA or HSA which is pretty cool! It is also third-party independently certified tested for things such as EMF(electromagnetic fields) irradiance(flux of radiance energy per unit area) and safety standards.

Lumebox reports that a lot of RLT companies do not properly test their devices for EMF and irradiance such as not measuring at the right place or measuring incorrectly, and Lumebox takes that issue out by using third-party testing.

The Lumebox is a red light therapy with near-infrared radiation as well. The main differences are as follows:

  • Red light is better for skin issues and skin health
  • NIR is better for deeper tissues such as muscles and joints

Both have been shown, however, to enhance cellular function but NIR has been shown to penetrate deeper.

I always just use both at the same time, as Lumebox recommends “When in doubt just use both” So you can get the benefits of red light therapy and NIR both at the same time.

Who created the Lumebox?

One of the best parts of this Lumebox review, is that the Lumebox red light therapy device was created by a favorite of mine, Dr. Vivian Chen. She is known as the account “Plateful Health” on Instagram, where she shares her knowledge of being an MD to her followers by using reasonable, non-scary tactics to help her followers live a less toxic lifestyle.

It is so perfect that she created the Lumebox because she saw the need to help get a reasonably affordable device that would work into the hands of her followers. She is a real gem to follow and an absolute wealth of knowledge. Go give her a follow on instagram!

Lumebox outperforms its competitors in red-light therapy devices

Lumebox is independently tested to be more powerful than other leading brands.

Their website states:

58% Greater red light irradiance

80% Greater near infrared irradiance

25% More body surface coverage

Better Results

They pride themselves in being a targeted red light therapy device as opposed to devices that use the whole body at once. They did the research and a good majority of their users achieved their desired results by using the device in target areas such as specific sore muscles and pains and on their face for cosmetic purposes and facial skin rejuvenation.

Lumebox is so popular that they continue to sell out extremely fast. They are already onto their newest model the 2.0 which is even better than the first version(which I have)

The newest 2.0 model comes with a few changes:

  • A new updated handle design for the portable RLT device (one of my biggest issues is the handle doesn’t hold very well but they have updated this!)
  • New option 6 or 12-minute timers (the first version only had 12-minute timers which sometimes was too long for me)

It still carries the same amazing benefits in the comfort of your own home as the first version as follows:

  • Portable device so you can RLT anytime and anywhere! It also comes with an amazing travel case
  • Powerful, and 25% percent bigger than most portable devices for larger treatment areas
  • Lab tested by a third party for high irradiance and safety
  • Delivers both red and near-infrared light simultaneously for maximum benefit
  • Delivers both red and near-infrared light simultaneously for maximum benefit
  • Delivers both red and near-infrared light simultaneously for maximum benefit
  • Low EMF

It includes:

  • Travel case
  • Protective eyewear
  • Battery
  • A/C adapter
  • Removable handle
  • Handheld Red light
  • User manual

There is an option to buy a stand for the device as well which would come in handy if you get tired of holding it.

Lumebox Review

I bought the Lumebox over a year and a half ago because I really wanted something that could help me relax, unwind and hopefully sleep a little better. As a mom of 4 (then was only 3) my sleep hasn’t been great for oh about the last seven years!  I love that it is a portable red light therapy device and comes with eye protection.

It has completely transformed my health through it many other ways. I used it so much in pregnancy for those hormonal headaches, backaches, and hemorrhoids that I always get in pregnancy (sorry TMI but it worked wonders) If you are wondering how that worked, I just laid down, placed it on the end of my rear end(not inside) and used the NIR and RLT. It significantly improved my hemorrhoids and the swelling. I love that it is compact and you can travel with it.

My husband loves it for his back as he has chronic low back pain from previous back surgery. Here is a list of all the things we use it for:

  • Fevers- helps to lower any inflammation
  •  lower back pain
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Headaches
  • Sleep support
  • Help increase our energy levels
  • After any medical intervention such as dental work
  • Cosmetic reasons as a face mask (who needs injectables or expensive laser treatments now)- if you need another reason to minimize wrinkles check out my previous post on Frownies here!

There really isn’t an issue you can’t use the Lumebox for!

Common FAQs:

Should I wear protective eyewear?

When I use it on my face I make sure I close my eyes but Lumebox states you absolutely should wear it and consult with a doctor if you are photosensitive

Can I wear clothing while using Lumebox?

It is not advised to wear clothing over the areas being targeted, but clothing can be worn on non-targeted areas

Can the device interfere with medications?

While studies have shown RLT is safe, always discuss with your healthcare provider before starting

Is the device safe for children?

We use our device on all our children ages 2.5-6! Studies have not been done extensively however on children so always check with your doctor

Who should NOT use Lumebox?

Photosensitive people, using steroids of any sort, healing from LASIK or eye surgery. The website states to consult a doctor for pregnant and lactating users, I used mine a ton while pregnant.

What are the side effects of Lumebox?

I wouldn’t say that there are any “side effects” I would just say that if you are just beginning to start slow as your body gets used to it. I like that the 2.0 has the 6-minute timer option now. Just as there is no “one size fits all” in health, some folks might be a bit more photosensitive than others.

What is Lumebox good for?

As mentioned above, really anything and everything! Sprained ankles, headaches, backaches, illnesses, sleep support, seasonal affective disorder support, ALL THE THINGS!

Can you use Lumebox on your face?

Absolutely!

Is Red light therapy worth it?

100% in my opinion, I think in this world we live in where most of us live very stressful lives, don’t get out in nature as often as we should, use screens too often; red light therapy can help bring us back to equilibrium. I am a huge fan as a nurse in the way that it supports the body in healing.

I hope this Lumebox Review was helpful! Leave a comment below if you try it out and what your favorite way to use it is!
